About Lorraine

The character I'm passionate about at the moment:

A Conversation on SIGHTED EYES/FEELING HEART

Director: Tracy Heather Strain
Narrated by LaTanya Richardson Jackson Lorraine Hansberry voiced by Anika Noni Rose
Artist. Activist. Rebel. Visionary.
If you only know “A Raisin in the Sun,” then you don’t know Lorraine Hansberry.
This moving, nonfiction account of the life of Lorraine Hansberry, writer of the groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun, tells the dramatic story of the young, gifted and black woman who chose words to fight injustice—on stage and off.
Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965) boldly challenged American society to live up to its ideals and chose theater as her agent of change. She personified the struggles of the 20th century until her early death at just 34 years old, but her words remain vibrant, revelatory and relevant.
Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart mixes interviews with those who knew her, including Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, her sister, Mamie Hansberry, with rare archival material. Lorraine Hansberry’s personal papers, home movies and a host of photographs and footage from a wide variety of sources dynamically and insightfully bring to life this first feature documentary about the woman who has been best-known only for writing the American classic A Raisin in the Sun.

Reel Sisters has hosted a conversation about the first feature-length documentary on playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who penned the iconic A Raisin In The Sun on Saturday, on October 21.  The conversation included director Tracy Heather Strain and was moderated by Marcia Pendelton (Walk Tall Girl Productions).
Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart, is an intimate documentary on playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s life as artist, activist and visionary.  The presentation will include clips from Sighted Eyes.
The film is directed by Tracy Heather Strain, with LaTanya Richardson Jackson narrating and Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Hansberry. Both Richardson Jackson and Rose performed and were Tony-nominated in the 2014 revival of the Tony-winning play alongside Denzel Washington.

Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart explores the life and work of Hansberry, a passionate Chicago-born writer and civil-rights advocate, who played a significant role in major cultural and political movements. That’s in addition of course to what she’s most known for: Sun the first work by a female African-American playwright to be produced on Broadway when it opened in 1959 with Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee starring. It won the Tony and has been one of the most influential stage plays ever written.
